Having recently been awarded the highest level of accreditation possible by the Philippines’ government, Banwa Private Island has now further signalled its ambition to deliver world-class personalised service by recruiting 2 new Island Managers to be responsible for guest services and operations respectively.
Victoria and Heinrich Steyn will lead the Banwa team into their first full season commencing December 2019.
Following 15 years in the superyacht industry culminating in both Purser and Chief Stewardess roles on high profile charter boats, Victoria went on to manage Over Yonder Cay – the Caribbean’s leading private island. Her attention to detail and guest-focused approach fits perfectly with Banwa’s highly customised guest service philosophies.
Heinrich, a superyacht captain, brings a wealth of operational experience to the island environment and his passion for sailing and scuba diving adds further depth and quality to the island’s marine activities programme.
Both Victoria and Heinrich are also fully aligned with Banwa’s environmental objectives and initiatives. Banwa is a private island sanctuary set within a marine protected area in the Palawan province of the Philippines.
Now recognised as a model for conservation best practice, the island is home to a research programme into the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle. Furthermore, it provides habitat for an abundance of native and migratory bird species, including the threatened Chinese Reef Egret and the seldom-seen Mantanani Scops Owl.
A reef regeneration program, the first of its kind in the region, is also delivering impressive results, with increasing numbers of threatened species returning to the waters surrounding Banwa’s 15 acres of luxury accommodation and leisure facilities.
Six stunning contemporary villas, each with their own infinity pools, occupy private beach-front locations providing accommodation for up to 22 guests. Further entourage and special event accommodation is also available upon request.
An open kitchen at Latitude – the island’s social hub, provides guests with personally tailored cuisine and an interactive culinary theatre experience too, whilst Meridian Spa & Wellness encompasses all things mind, body and soul with a massage suite, gym, Pilates studio, tennis court and more.
A 9-hole short game golf course, dive centre, Hobie Cats, kayaks and all the water sport activities you’d expect complete the impressive amenities on offer at Banwa.
Yet it is the stunning location of the island which further sets it apart. Its proximity to Tubbatah Reef, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s finest dive sites makes Banwa a perfect base for scuba enthusiasts. A short heli trip takes you to one of UNESCO’s 7 Natural Wonders – the Underground River near Puerto Princesa, whilst El Nido’s limestone cliffs, turquoise waters and pristine coves are all easily accessible too.
Also close by is the Barbacan River. Winding through Amazon-esque mangrove forests, this rich habitat is an example of a perfectly balanced ecosystem, as evidenced by the vast array of species discoverable here.
Victoria Steyn commented; “We’re thrilled to join the Banwa team at such an exciting time for the island. Our experience of delivering world-class, personalised service to UHNWIs over many years has given us a unique insight into what really makes the difference. Banwa is set amidst one of the least explored pristine environments on earth, and the prospect of sharing the unique life experiences this region provides with our guests is hugely motivating”.
Banwa Private Island is now available for exclusive charter on a full island buy-out basis only.
